A terrifying floating witch

In waking life, I was in my bed between 3 and 4 a.m., having trouble returning to a night of light, unrefreshing sleep. Each time I started to drift off, I sensed a terrifying female presence in the room - a witch, an old hag. Each time, I fought to wake myself up. I believe I was sometimes successful in calling out or waking myself up, although the whole thing may have been a dream. It seems like I did once actually cry out, "Just un-plug it all!"

I was confused as to where my bedroom was, sometimes I thought I was in a childhood home, sometimes I placed it correctly in Saint Paul, but at those times I thought my bedroom door opened into the common hall.

The witch was usually floating horizontally between my bed and the door, sometimes standing, always more of a sensed presence than a clear image. This went on for a very long time, long enough for my conscious mind to try to come up with ways to deal with it. I thought about walking towards the door and about the apartment to convince myself there was nobody there, but this didn't seem to make sense as I already knew I was just dreaming things. I pretended my parents were in a room next door, but this didn't help: I was in no real danger, just imagining a terrifying thing.

Finally, I decided to try to draw the presence in close to me and embrace it. She floated closer to me and this seemed to work as I found the specter more repulsive than terrifying. By drawing it in instead of trying to shrink away, I demonstrated control over it and was able to fully fall asleep - or stop the dream if I was dreaming the whole thing.
